Carbs: Are They Good or Bad for You?

Are carbs good or bad for you? This has been a common, and somewhat controversial, topic in the media over the past several years. Some believe carbs are not only healthy but also necessary, while others feel that we should stay away from carbs completely.

There are actually two different types of carbs – simple and complex.

    • Simple carbs are also known as the "bad carbs." What makes them bad? They are generally low in fiber and other nutrients; consist of empty calories that get converted into fat; and they raise your glucose levels, which in turn makes you feel tired. Examples of simple carbs include desserts, sugary cereals, candy, soda, and refined breads.

    • Complex carbs are also known as the "good carbs." What makes them good? Complex carbs are generally high in fiber and other nutrients, help you feel full with less calories, and naturally stimulate your metabolism. Also known as “starchy” foods, complex carbs are the preferred source of glucose for our bodies (glucose from carbohydrates is the preferred source of fuel for most bodily functions). Examples of complex carbs include whole grain breads, bran cereal, brown rice, potatoes, and fruit.

So, are carbs good or bad for you? They are actually both, depending on which type of carb you are referring to.
